Every year, the Holy Father addresses a gathering of ambassadors from every country that has diplomatic relations with the Holy See. This week, Pope Francis Pope Francis hit the bull’s-eye, condemning a billion-dollar human trafficking enterprise that exploits poor women around the world, stealing their children under the color of contract and international law.
“In this regard, I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs. A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract,” the Holy Father told the assembled diplomats.
The message undoubtedly had several attendees shifting in their seats. Many small and poor Eastern European countries find the “womb rental” practice to be a vital source of foreign currency.
