A Catechesis on the Human Person and Gender Ideology

This month we celebrate the anniversary of an important pastoral letter written by Arlington Bishop Michael Burbidge.

In his letter, the bishop addresses “Gender Ideology,” another perverse chapter in the secular culture’s ongoing destruction of the family, the dignity of marriage, and human nature itself.

Gender Ideology echoes Satan’s response in the Garden of Eden when he saw God’s plan for mankind.

“Be fruitful and multiply,” God told our first parents. (Genesis 1:22)

Satan’s response: “Don’t be fruitful, don’t multiply” – the creed of today’s “Green Revolution.”

“Have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth,” God told Adam and Eve. ( Genesis 1:26 )

Satan’s response: “Don’t take dominion over them, let them take dominion over you” – the creed of today’s Global Warming alarmists.

And imagine Satan’s horror when he saw this: “God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female He created them.” (Genesis 5:2)

“NO, NO,” Satan shouts. “Be whatever you want to be, create your own gender, don’t let your body get in your way!”

“In the past decade,” the bishop writes, “our culture has seen growing acceptance of transgender ideology-that is, the claim that a person’s biological sex and personal identity have no necessary connection and could in fact contradict each other. According to this view, “human identity” is self-defined and “becomes the choice of the individual.”
